How to choose the right product: microns, flow rate and compatibility

In most cases the choice of a filtration or transfer component comes down to three figures, all shown in the Specifications table of each product.

1. The filtration rating (microns)

It indicates the size of the particles retained. A lower value filters more but increases the pressure drop and shortens the life of the element if the fluid is heavily contaminated. To protect modern injection systems you go below 10 microns; for pre-filtration on the suction side you stay at higher values.

2. The flow rate

The flow rate of the filter must be equal to or greater than that of the pump. Undersizing the filter is the most frequent mistake: it results in pressure drop, pump cavitation and replacements that come round too often.

3. Fluid compatibility

Every product lists the compatible fluids — diesel, HVO, petrol, AdBlue, hydraulic oils. Seals and materials are not interchangeable: a component for diesel is not automatically suitable for AdBlue or petrol.

Connections and overall dimensions

Before ordering, check the diameter of the connections and the overall dimensions (height, width, diameter): these data are shown in the table and are the most common cause of returns due to incompatibility.

If the fuel is already contaminated

If the problem is not prevention but cure, the filter alone is not enough: what is needed is fuel polishing or treatment with additives, preceded by a fuel test to understand whether the contamination is water, particulate or microbial.
